AN EXCELLENT FUTURE

The appraisal of real estate is a fascinating, multi-faceted profession that brings you into contact with a wide variety of business situations and with people from all walks of life.

Careers are available in:
 Private practice
 Lending institutions
 National corporations
 Real estate companies
 All levels of government
 Development companies

As an appraiser, you will observe, research and analyze the real estate market, as well as the actions of the people who operate within it. You are interested in facts, and will thoroughly investigate the property being appraised. In order to do the job to the best of your ability, you will keep abreast of current market trends, the general value of real estate in your area, taxes and special assessments, and all other factors that affect the value of the property.

To accomplish these, you must have a blend of general and specific education and relevant valuation experience.

How to Become an Appraiser

You can begin your appraisal career in one of two ways.

The most common career path is to become a member of the Appraisal Institute of Canada and the Ontario Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada (OA-AIC), being working as a junior appraiser and, at the same time, take the educational courses that enhance your skills and lead you towards your designation.

Sometimes, individuals not working in the real estate sector but interested in eventually moving to the real estate sector take most of the educational program before becoming a member.

Since as soon as you become a member you are covered by the Appraisal Institute’s insurance program, we require you to do some basic education before we will let you join the Institute. Please click on "Candidate Membership" in the Navitation box to the left.
